Results.
FITA star weekend 14/15 August
We had a spectacular weekend of weather for the FITA Star. I am sure the endorphins created by the brilliant blue sky helped archers achieve the overall high scores. 27 Archers attended the shoot.
Results:
1st place Ryan Tyack 113.3% of GMB scoring 2578
2nd place Greg Jans 105.2692% of GMB scoring 2737
3rd place Jessica Sutton 105.2632% of GMB scoring 2600
4th place Michael Brosnan (who else) - 104.9% of GMB scoring 2717
Of particular note were Jessica Sutton who broke all distance state records and the National record for the event for Cub Girl Recurve. Jessica’s performance continues to improve at a pace. Note how close Jessica was to taking 2nd place over all missing out by .007%.
Neil Digweed set a state record for the FITA 60 with a score of 2789 – Neil came 5th overall. And Colin Forster who shot his first ever FITA event and scored a very respectable 843 on the first day. Great effort Colin.
If you are confused about the scoring and why Greg didn’t come first with his overall score of 2737, each archers score is calculated as a percentage of the GMB (Grand Master Bowman) score for their class (gender/age/bow). That means Greg had to achieve a higher score relative to his GMB score to get first place.
Up coming events
In September we have a number of award and record events so please get your registration in if you intend to shoot at these events.
· Sunday 12 September - Percy Davidson Memorial FITA and QRE –
· Saturday 18 September – MPB 18 & 25 M silver arrow and club championships
· Sunday 26 September – Tom Hannay Memorial Silver arrow Field and QRE

Match play
2 Match play events have been set in the calendar for the balance of 2010. These will be held on Sunday 5 September and 7 November starting at 1 pm. If you are a competitive archer or want ot experience a very different format I encourage you to come along.
Grant application for Indoor shooting range
We are now drawing near to second lodgement of our grant application for the indoor shed. The executive remain confident that we stand a good chance of success.
House keeping
Another reminder to members to put the butts back under cover when you have finished using them. Also to bin your rubbish, including shot out targets, in the bins provided. This will help greatly in protecting our assets as well as keeping our club tidy. This includes unwanted water bottles.
Take care when driving out of the club grounds at the first merge with the Field road to your left. The club executive will be erecting a sign there to improve awareness for drivers as they turn right into the main Range road.
Working Bee
Thank you to all who helped out with the working bee on Sunday the 1st. The club is becoming more archer/member friendly with each effort made at these working bees. Thank you!
Coaching
A good turn out to the Coaching day on 8 August. Many members benefited from Keith’s coaching, including yours truly (scores keep getting better). Thank you Keith and Julie.

Junior Archery – Kids Saturday Morning fun shoot
Further to the Junior archery item in last months newsletter….
The number of juniors in the club is growing which is great. Some of the juniors aspire to beat the adults and are happy to compete on Saturday afternoons. These and young archers want a more fun centred approach to their archery as well as a time to socialise.
Starting on the 28th August Dave Sutton and Paul Cartwright are organising a fun session prior to the Saturday morning coaching. There will be fun archery based games as well as a chance for the juniors to get to know each other better.

As part of the sessions we will be able to inform juniors and parents about what is involved with going to large tournaments, when to book, how to qualify for SQAS teams etc.
We are also arranging some field and clout based coaching sessions and some other informative sessions such as fletching and string making for those who want to learn a bit more. We will advertise these on the notice board and all are welcome - even the more mature archers.
The session on the 28th August will be at 9:00am and then from 4th September they will be at 10:00. This does not replace the coaching sessions but gives the juniors some fun shooting before the coaching begins
Pan Pacific Masters Games- 6th-14th November 2010
Hi everyone
- Just a reminder that the Pan Pacific Masters Games are being held on the Gold Coast from 6th – 14th November. Early bird Games Fee closes Friday 3 September.
- Both Target and Field Archery events are being conducted.
Target Archery is being hosted at the Gold Coast Archery Club grounds 13th and 14th November.
- The minimum age to enter is 30 years
- Divisions include Freestyle Compound, Barebow Compound, Longbow, Freestyle Recurve and Barebow Recurve
- Age divisions 30-49, 50-59, 60-69, 70+
- There are two sets of fees:
- Games fee covers entry and entertainment package into the Games and gives you unlimited access to the " Games Village " and many other benefits.
- COMPETITOR: $90 (if online). Note that the Competitor Games Fee will increase to $110 after Friday 3 September.
- Sports fee covers the entry for Target Archery - $70 per person. For more info see attached or click on Target Archery Details.

Beware the paralysis tick
Over the past month or so I have found paralysis ticks on me after walking the field.
Whilst this has not had any personal affect on me, it seems as though I may have brought one home on my clothing and given it to my Labrador pup Jess.
A couple of weeks ago we noticed what seemed to be a lameness in one of her front legs. Then we thought that it was her hind leg that was affected. Some time later we realised that she was in trouble and that she was finding it increasingly difficult to stand.
I took her downstairs to relieve her bladder and she could hardly squat. It was after I lay her on her side and was stroking her that I found the tick.
We were lucky.
A rushed trip to club member and vet, Jo and vet husband Kev found her sedated and dosed up with anti-venom. She was hospitalised for several days and made a gradual recovery thanks to the skill of Jo, Kev and their dedicated staff.
The moral of this?
If you are shooting the SQAS or MPB field, there is a lot of bandicoot activity. Bandicoots it would seem are the primary hosts for these deadly parasites. Others are the wallabies that frequent the area. Check yourself after you come off the field and certainly before you have contact with your pets. After the SQAS Field Championships, a husband and wife pair discovered 3 on themselves after returning home.
Check for yourself. Google "paralysis tick" and find out what you need to know about this beast.
